Overview

Alex Van Rysselberghe has litigated a variety of class action, securities, employment, and other complex commercial matters. While he handles all aspects of litigation, Alex leverages his extensive experience working for both state and federal courts to produce exceptional written work that effectively tells his clients’ stories to judges and juries.

Before joining Stoel Rives, Alex was a term law clerk for Sr. Judge W. Louis Sands of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia and a law clerk for Justice Chris Garrett of the Oregon Supreme Court and Oregon Court of Appeals.

Commercial and Employment Litigation

  • Represented an Oregon Coordinated Care Organization in prosecuting constitutional and contract claims against the state for allegedly setting unfairly low and retaliatory Medicaid reimbursement rates.
  • Represented a Pacific Northwest investor in resolving a complex corporate dispute arising from the investor’s squeeze-out in retaliation for his discovery of misconduct by other investors.
  • Represented a small Portland-area business in defending and resolving claims of alleged disability discrimination brought by a former employee.
  • Secured dismissal of two Oregon State Bar investigations on behalf of an attorney-client who was being investigated for alleged violations of Oregon’s Rules of Professional Conduct.

Class Action

  • Represented two major Oregon universities in class action lawsuits seeking tuition refunds following the COVID-19 pandemic, drafting briefs that successfully secured pre-discovery summary judgment and dismissal for one of the universities.
  • Represented a major grocery store chain in litigating a consumer class action lawsuit arising from the store’s allegedly deceptive discount offers.

Pro Bono

  • Successfully represented an Oregon domestic violence shelter in quashing subpoena seeking confidential victim records in a collateral criminal case.
  • Successfully represented a domestic violence victim in defeating an abuser’s challenge to a stalking order.
  • Advised an Oregon domestic violence shelter in seeking to offer confidential victim advocacy services in Oregon schools.
