Overview
For nearly a decade, Jonathan has helped technology companies across the Pacific Northwest and beyond protect and commercialize their innovations. As a registered patent attorney in Stoel Rives’ Technology & Intellectual Property group, he combines deep technical knowledge with practical legal strategies to guide clients through patent portfolio development, IP counseling, and technology transactions to protect and commercialize innovation. Jonathan works with startups and global enterprises in the software, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, mobile applications, telecommunications, electrochemical, and advanced manufacturing industries.
Jonathan’s practice includes U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio development, and post-grant analysis. He designs patent strategies that align with business objectives, helping clients secure strong IP assets that attract investment and support growth. With a background in applied mathematics and physics, Jonathan translates complex technologies into enforceable patents.
Beyond patent procurement, Jonathan advises on patentability, infringement, freedom-to-operate, due diligence, and IP risk mitigation. He drafts and negotiates technology agreements, including IP licenses, software licenses, and collaboration agreements, and counsels on open-source compliance, and standards-essential patents. Jonathan serves as an IP specialist in mergers and acquisitions, performing thorough due diligence to assess ownership, validity, and commercialization potential of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets to mitigate risk and preserve deal value. Whether guiding a startup through its first filings or managing global portfolios for established companies, Jonathan delivers actionable, business-focused IP solutions.
Before joining Stoel, Jonathan gained insight into both the judiciary and the technology sector. He served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Justice Debra L. Stephens of the Washington State Supreme Court and worked as a law clerk in the legal department of a global technology company headquartered in Seattle.
