Oregon governor appoints Stoel Rives partner to state commission focused on transportation policy

PORTLAND, Ore.Stoel Rives LLP is pleased to announce that its immediate past Firm Managing Partner and current partner, Robert D. Van Brocklin, has been appointed to the Oregon Transportation Commission. The OTC is responsible for oversight of the state’s transportation planning and development and oversees a nearly $5 billion biennial transportation budget. The Transportation Commission is also responsible for insuring the implementation of the $5.3 billion dollar transportation funding package enacted by the Oregon Legislature and signed into law by Governor Kate Brown earlier this year.

“This is a critical time for infrastructure investment in our state,” said Van Brocklin. “Our transportation systems are rapidly aging, and we need to repair the existing system and make new investments throughout Oregon to promote a healthy economy and maintain our high quality of life. We also face unprecedented population growth that is placing enormous pressure on public services, as well as the advent of new technologies that will dramatically change transportation alternatives in the coming years.

“The recently passed state transportation funding package provides an important opportunity to begin to make key investments to modernize our infrastructure network to meet the future,” Van Brocklin said. “My professional background includes involvement in Oregon transportation funding and development, so joining the commission seemed timely and a good fit.”

Van Brocklin is a partner in Stoel Rives LLP, where he works from the firm's Portland office. He is the immediate past Firm Managing Partner and CEO of Stoel Rives. Van Brocklin’s legal practice has focused on energy, land use, and infrastructure development, including on complex project siting and administrative law and policy matters. In addition to the Oregon Transportation Commission, Van Brocklin co-chaired the Portland Region’s United Way Campaign and a Portland Public Schools bond measure campaign, and serves or has served on the boards of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Portland Business Alliance, Portland Schools Foundation, Portland Center Stage, the Oregon Symphony Association, and the University of Oregon Law School Advisory Council, among others. Van Brocklin joins Commission Chair Tammy Baney and Commissioners Sean O’Hollaren, Paula Brown, and Alando Smith on the five-member commission.
