Overview
Jon Iversen is an Alaska-based tax attorney who provides tax planning and tax structuring advice and represents clients in tax audits and appeals. His practice emphasizes state and local taxation. Prior to joining Stoel Rives, Jon served as Director of the Tax Division of the Department of Revenue for the State of Alaska.
One of the most highly rated attorneys in the state in his field, Jon has extensive experience counseling and representing clients on state and local tax audits and appeals, incentives, state and local tax considerations in all manner of transactions, and the development of law and policy. His practice includes oil and gas production taxes, property taxes, corporate income taxes, mining license taxes, excise taxes, and fisheries taxes.
Jon served as a core team member in drafting and implementing the laws and regulations for Alaska’s oil and gas production (severance) tax and property tax. Other areas of emphasis include oil and gas royalties, net profit share leases, and unitization. Over the course of his career, Jon has successfully counseled clients on numerous complex tax matters and litigated and negotiated settlements of major tax and royalty cases.
Jon also worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alaska in the Oil, Gas & Mining Section, representing the Alaska Department of Revenue in tax matters and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources in royalty and unitization concerns; as an associate at Eide, Miller & Pate, P.C.; and as a judicial clerk for Superior Court Judge Larry D. Card.
Jon is a State Tax Notes columnist. He is managing partner of Stoel Rives’ Anchorage office. Jon is a past co-leader of the firm’s Energy & Natural Resources Industry Group and a past pro bono coordinator for the Anchorage office.

- Represented Exxon Mobil Corporation, Hilcorp Alaska, LLC and SAExploration Inc. in an Alaska Superior Court declaratory judgment action against the Alaska Department of Revenue concerning Alaska oil and gas production taxes and Exxon Mobil Corporation in an Alaska Supreme Court appeal concerning this matter.
- Represented Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. in a number of Board of Equalization, Alaska Superior Court and Alaska Supreme Court appeals regarding property tax assessments of the Fort Knox gold mine.
- Counsel to Furie Operating Alaska, LLC for a $160 million financing transaction to fund the installation of an offshore natural gas production platform, marine pipeline, and onshore production facilities to bring natural gas to market from Furie’s Kitchen Lights Unit in the Cook Inlet.
- Counsel to Repsol E&P USA, Inc. regarding Alaska oil and gas production taxes, property taxes and royalties in connection with oil and gas exploration and development activities on the North Slope of Alaska.
- Counsel to Great Bear Petroleum Operating LLC regarding Alaska oil and gas production taxes and property taxes in connection with oil and gas exploration and development activities on the North Slope of Alaska.
- Counsel to Silver Bay Seafoods in appeals of assessments of fisheries taxes.
- Regularly counsels and represents a number of oil and gas exploration and production companies in oil and gas production tax and property tax matters before the Alaska Department of Revenue.
- Frequently assists oil and gas companies in purchase and sale and financing transactions involving Alaska assets.
- Regularly counsels and represents taxpayers in Alaska corporate income tax matters.
- Regularly counsels and represents mining companies in mining license tax matters before the Alaska Department of Revenue.
- Regularly counsels and represents Alaska Native Corporations in regard to Alaska state and local taxes, including Alaska oil and gas production taxes, corporate income taxes, mining license taxes, property taxes and motor fuel taxes.
