About Joe

Joe Hawkins is counsel to the firm practicing in the Technology and Intellectual Property group. Joe’s practice emphasizes patent prosecution, due diligence investigations, competitive assessments for product clearance, and pre-litigation patent analysis. His technical focus includes hardware and software, engineering with an emphasis on data storage, security, networking, communications, optics, and networking technologies.

Joe worked as a software engineer for six years at Novell and NextPage designing and implementing network security and peer-to-peer networking products. He also worked as a summer associate Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman, Portland, Oregon (2005); and Fish and Richardson in San Diego, California (2006).

  • Represents wide range of computer hardware and software companies from Fortune 500 to startups. Experience includes preparation and prosecution of U.S. and international patents, patent portfolio management, and strategic counseling. Worked closely with client in-house IP counsel to obtain patent protection on foundational flash-storage technology.
  • Provides noninfringement, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate opinions; product clearance analysis; due diligence investigation; and guidance regarding patent design around.
  • Counsels clients in responding to patent demand letters, including pre-litigation patent analysis, and post-grant review.

  • Data analytics technology including data mining, semantic extraction and disambiguation, natural language processing, predictive modeling, and data visualization.
  • Data storage technologies encompassing front-end storage interfaces, storage virtualization, failure prediction and recovery, cache architectures, and storage semiconductor design and manufacture.
