About Jonathan

Jonathan Barnard is an associate in Stoel Rives’ Technology & Intellectual Property group. As a registered patent attorney, he provides U.S. and international patent-related services for clients ranging from emerging start-ups to multinational companies. Jonathan concentrates his practice on developing patent-filing strategies and portfolio-management programs, and preparing and prosecuting patent applications, as well as providing post-grant analysis. With a background in applied mathematics and physics, Jonathan has advised companies in the computer software, cloud computing, mobile applications, telecommunication, and electrochemical areas, among others. He has also represented clients that manufacture a range of technologies such as virtualized software systems; electronics; wireless communication systems; artificial intelligence; audio engineering systems; rain and stormwater management technologies; augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR) applications; and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems.

Jonathan has also counseled clients in patentability, patent validity, patent infringement, due diligence and freedom to operate, product clearance, intellectual property (IP) litigation risk-mitigation strategies, IP licensing, standards-essential patent licensing, privacy and data security, open sourcing, and technology transactions.

Before joining Stoel Rives, Jonathan was an associate with Dorsey & Whitney LLP (2019–2022), and both an associate and summer associate with Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP (2016–2019). While in law school he was a judicial extern for the Honorable Justice Debra L. Stephens of the Washington State Supreme Court, as well as a law clerk in the legal department of a large, Seattle-area technology company.

  • Conducted invention disclosure meetings, prepared U.S. and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent applications, and managed patent prosecution for a variety of technologies in countries located in North America, Europe, Asia, and South America.
  • Counseled clients on patent strategies, including use of expedited examination techniques, provisional applications, development of a global portfolio footprint, and preparation for patent assertion and defense.
  • Conducted harvesting sessions to identify and pursue product-driven and commercially relevant technologies.
  • Counseled clients regarding business-relevant patent portfolio development, growth, and management.
  • Evaluated patent portfolios to develop licensing, enforcement, and defensive positions.
  • Evaluated technology transfer and technology license agreements, including licenses for products (software/hardware) as well as standards-essential patents.
  • Analysis of asserted patents and related trial documents to develop IP litigation risk-mitigation strategies.
  • Drafted offensive and defensive opinions for patentability, patent invalidity, and patent infringement issues.
  • Counseled clients regarding third-party ex parte re-exam, inter partes review, and post-grant challenges.
