Seth Hilton Quoted on Whether to Extend Life of California Nuclear Plant

The fate of Diablo Canyon, California’s last operational nuclear power plant, is likely sealed, according to veteran energy industry attorney Seth Hilton. Hilton told Utility Dive in an interview published last week that state regulators will most likely move forward with plans to decommission the power plant by 2025.

Hilton told the publication it would be “somewhat surprising to change course at this point, given the work that the California Public Utilities Commission has done to replace that resource.”

The commission issued a procurement order last year for 11.5 GW of clean energy resources to replace in part the capacity lost by closing Diablo, and the agency and load-serving entities are making good progress in obtaining those resources.
