Rachel Groshong Discusses Path to Stoel Rives’ Partnership, Challenges, Biggest Influence, More

In The News

In a new “How I Made It” Q&A for Law.com, Rachel Groshong outlines her path to the partnership at Stoel Rives, why she decided to join the firm, who was her great influence in propelling her to the partnership, what advice she would give to an associate who wants to make partner, and more.

Groshong, a litigator in Stoel Rives’ Seattle office, points to the importance of having an engaged mentor to guide a lawyer in becoming a partner—in her case fellow Stoel litigator David Goodnight, of whom she said, “His respect for my abilities helped give me confidence to build my own strengths as a lawyer, be true to myself and be zealous in my practice.”

Asked what the most common mistake is that she sees other attorneys making, Groshong stresses the importance of basic communication skills and of being responsive. “Responding lets people know you care; you are engaged and someone they should want to work with. … Communicate with partners and your team to manage expectations so they trust you.”
