“The major opportunity here is to bring down the cost of electric vehicle ownership. If these systems can successfully stack value streams, they will expand the market for electric vehicles while providing significant benefits to the electricity grid.”
—Attorney Brian Orion
Energy attorney Brian Orion was quoted in Microgrid Knowledge in an article titled “The Good, Bad and Ugly of Vehicle-to-Grid Services,” published January 5, 2018. The article discusses possible advantages and downsides to vehicle-to-grid services, in which plug-in electric cars provide power back to the electricity grid to perform various grid services, like demand response.
Some observers say that if drivers avoid charging during peak hours and charge during off-peak hours, they can accomplish nearly the same as they would by also feeding power back to the grid, while others, including Orion, see greater potential for vehicle-to-grid—by “stacking value streams,” which involves providing multiple services, including demand response, peak shaving, load shifting, and capacity services; and as support for the integration of renewable energy.
