Stoel Rives attorney and California office managing partner Tim Taylor discusses flex time for attorneys in a recent Sacramento Business Journal article. Offering flex time opportunities for attorneys is gaining ground with some firms, allowing them to retain talent and balance the needs of associates.

Tim described the arrangements that Stoel Rives offers attorneys who want to work a flexible schedule. The firm provides several flexibility options that include associates working 50-60 percent of a full-time schedule and being paid a percentage of a full-time salary, sabbatical opportunities, and other leave policies.

Associates can still become partners while working a flexible schedule. Tim noted that while achieving partner status is possible, it may take longer because part-time associates who aren't at the firm as much don't have the experience of a full-time associate.
