About Jonathan

Jonathan Cohen is a transactional real estate attorney with more than 25 years of experience in private practice and as in-house counsel for private and publicly held real estate development companies. He has extensive experience in the development, financing and leasing of enclosed regional malls, open air centers, power centers, grocery anchored strip centers, hotels and office complexes. Jon’s capabilities span a wide range of real estate matters including purchase and sale transactions; leasing transactions; mixed use developments; public/private partnerships; mortgage, mezzanine and structured financings; joint venture negotiations and documentation; retail tenant representation; hotel franchise, management and development agreements; and aviation facility development and leasing.

Before joining Stoel Rives, Jon was a partner and Chair of the Real Estate group at Weiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole & Boniske, P.L. in Coral Gables, Florida (2011-2014); associate general counsel at Turnberry Associates in Aventura, Florida (2006-2011); and a partner at Bilzin Sumberg Price Baena & Axelrod LLP in Miami, Florida (2004-2006). His earlier career in New York includes time with Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP; New Plan Excel Realty Trust; Pyramid Companies; and Kurtzman, Cohen, Matera & Gurock.

  • Shopping Centers: Advised on matters related to the development, leasing and construction of the Palisades Center, West Nyack, New York; Aventura Mall expansion, Aventura, Florida; Pointe Orlando, Orlando, Florida; Town Square, Las Vegas, Nevada and the redevelopment of the Market on University, Plantation, Florida and Loehmann’s Plaza, Aventura, Florida.
  • Hotels: Advised on matters relating to the redevelopment, leasing and financing of the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami Beach; Turnberry Isle Resort and Country Club, Aventura, Florida; Doubletree Hotel Orlando, Florida.
  • Retail Leasing: Represented national and regional apparel retailers and banks in the negotiation of retail leases for locations within enclosed malls, strip centers and Manhattan street locations.
  • Office Leasing: Represented major office developer with offices located throughout South Florida on matters ranging from the leasing, financing and development of office projects; represented major New York insurance company in the leasing of its Manhattan world headquarters; represented major Miami bank in connection with the initial lease out of its Brickell office tower.
  • Big Box Leasing: Represented major REITs and developers in connection with the negotiation of anchor tenant leases for strip malls, power centers and enclosed malls including the preparation and negotiation of reciprocal easement agreements.
  • Public/private partnerships: Represented the City of Boca Raton in connection with Mizner Park Mall, a mixed use shopping center partnership with General Growth; the City Of Miramar in connection with the development of Miramar Town Center, a mixed use partnership with the Rockefeller Group and Kimco; and the City of Dania Beach in connection with the redevelopment of the City’s waterfront pier and City Hall property for the development of retail and residential uses.
  • Aviation: Handled the leasing and development of the Turnberry Aviation private hangar facilities at Opa Locka Airport; the development of the Centurion Cargo Airways terminal at Miami International Airport; the acquisition and development of the Miami International Airport Intermodal Center.
