Stoel Rives Boosts San Francisco Office with Addition of Silicon Valley Privacy Law and Technology Transactions Veteran John Pavolotsky

SAN FRANCISCO—Stoel Rives, an Am Law 200 law firm, today announced that John Pavolotsky has joined its Technology & Intellectual Property Transactions practice group in San Francisco as of counsel. He brings more than 20 years’ experience practicing in-house and in private practice, most recently serving as associate general counsel at Roku, Inc., and as group counsel at Intel Corporation.

Pavolotsky’s practice will focus on advising clients regarding privacy and data security matters and on structuring and negotiating complex technology transactions, including inbound and outbound hardware and software licensing and strategic collaboration and development agreements.

While at Roku, Inc., Pavolotsky served as director and associate general counsel in the technology and commercial transactions legal group where he counseled engineering and other internal clients on a variety of complex inbound product and enterprise transactions. Prior to that, he worked for eight years at Intel Corporation, most recently as group counsel, where he was the lead business unit attorney for the Data Platforms Engineering & Architecture Group and as a leader of the Privacy and Security Legal Team across the company’s global platform. Pavolotsky previously served as of counsel at Greenberg Traurig, LLP, corporate counsel with SugarCRM, Inc., and corporate counsel with Fourth Dimension Software.

Pavolotsky has handled matters related to international data transfers, mergers and acquisitions, incident response, GDPR & CCPA readiness, privacy legislation and impact assessments, data subject requests, cybersecurity policy development, and cyberinsurance procurement. In addition, Pavolotsky has drafted and negotiated complex IP transactions, strategic investments in IP assets, corporate purchase agreements, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) agreements and joint development agreements.

Pavolotsky has taught Comparative Privacy Law at the Santa Clara University School of Law and Technology Transactions at U.C. Davis School of Law. In addition, he serves as vice chair of the California Lawyers Association’s Intellectual Property Section. He is an International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) and holds CIPP/US/E and CIPM certifications. Pavolotsky has served on the IAPP U.S Exam Development Advisory Board and as a CIPP/E and CIPP/US instructor. He received his J.D. from the University of California at Davis, M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and B.S. from the University of California at San Diego.
