Minneapolis, Minn. — On behalf of the League of Women Voters Minnesota, Common Cause Minnesota, and the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition organizations, Stoel Rives drafted and filed an amicus brief in Schroeder v. Minnesota Secretary of State, pending in the Minnesota State Supreme Court, seeking to restore the voting rights of tens of thousands of Minnesotans with prior felony convictions.
Stoel Rives attorneys Marc Al, Andrew Pieper, Riley Conlin and Emily Atmore represented the voting rights amici coalition on a pro bono basis. The appellants in the case are represented by the ACLU and Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP.
“We are pleased to represent this distinguished coalition of organizations, united in their mission to safeguard the fundamental right to vote,” said Marc Al. “This right is enshrined in the Constitution, and we have argued that Minnesota’s system of voting disenfranchisement for felonies that were not recognized as such when the Minnesota Constitution was adopted is constitutionally intolerable and that the lower courts’ judgments to the contrary must be reversed.”
