SACRAMENTO, Calif. Stoel Rives LLP is pleased to announce that water resource attorney Elizabeth P. Ewens has joined the firm as a partner in its Sacramento office. Ewens joins Stoel Rives’ Environment, Land Use and Natural Resources (ELUNR) group.

“Elizabeth is a great addition to our environmental and natural resources practice in California,” Brian Nese, California offices managing partner, said. “Legal disputes over water in the state are unlikely to abate anytime soon, and she brings extensive experience and knowledge for clients involved in those types of legal matters.”

“Elizabeth’s reputation in California in the area of water resources precedes her, and we look forward to her joining our practice,” said Tina M. Grovier, chair of the ELUNR group. “As well as counting on her to guide clients in water resources-related matters throughout the state, we fully expect her to be a go-to source for her expertise in that area to assist clients in our markets elsewhere in the U.S.”

Ewens’ practice emphasizes the preservation and defense of water rights, and water management. She has represented public agencies, State Water Project contractors and individuals in complex water resource litigation in the western U.S. involving both surface and groundwater rights. Ewens has engaged in water resources litigation at the administrative, trial court and appellate levels. Her appellate experience includes three cases before the Idaho Supreme Court arising out of the Snake River Basin Adjudication and petitions for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.

“Over and above my area of practice, joining Stoel Rives allows me to offer my clients support in other areas of the law offered by the talented attorneys and resources of the firm,” Ewens said. “It felt like the right move at the right time, and I look forward to taking the next steps in my career with the firm.”

Before joining Stoel Rives, Ewens was a partner with Ellison, Schneider Harris & Donlan LLP in Sacramento and with McQuaid, Bedford & Van Zandt LLP in San Francisco. She is a frequent speaker on water rights and policy and a contributing author and co-editor for the ABA’s Environment, Energy & Resources Year in Review. Ewens is admitted to practice in California, Nevada and Colorado; before the U.S. Supreme Court; before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims; and in several federal appeals and district courts. She received her law degree from the University of California, Davis, and bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
