Serrurier and Filippi to lead main office of Oregon’s largest law firm

PORTLAND, Ore. – Stoel Rives LLP, Oregon’s largest law firm, is pleased to announce that Penny Serrurier and David Filippi have been named the new Office Co-Managing Partners for the law firm’s Portland headquarters effective Jan. 1, 2017. They succeed Wally Van Valkenburg, who served in the role for more than a decade.

As the new Office Co-Managing Partners, Serrurier and Filippi will focus on long-term strategic planning, including the implementation of new tools and business processes that will allow the firm’s Portland attorneys to serve their clients more efficiently and effectively.  They will take advantage of the new, state-of-the-art office space at Park Avenue West and will continue to maintain the firm’s reputation for excellence with a diverse, collaborative and client-focused workforce.

An experienced transactional attorney, Serrurier has been with Stoel Rives since 1992. She focuses her practice on nonprofit law and tax-exempt organizations, charitable giving, estate planning and trust administration. She is a past recipient of the Portland Business Journal’s “Orchid Award,” the publication’s annual recognition of women executives who have shown extraordinary business and civic leadership. As a female leader in Stoel Rives, Serrurier will continue to support the firm’s diversity efforts while furthering the firm’s commitment to innovation, client service and value.

“I am honored by the trust that our colleagues have placed in David and me and am proud to continue the efforts that Wally began to improve the way we deliver services to our clients,” said Serrurier. “Wally has set the leadership bar high; Stoel Rives has a proud history of providing high quality legal services while being an exceptional place to work. We have a welcome challenge ahead of us to continue to build upon that legacy.”

A natural resource, environmental and land use law attorney, Filippi concentrates his practice on water rights and water quality, fish and wildlife law, hydropower relicensing and project facility siting and permitting. Filippi has been with Stoel Rives since 1996 and, like Serrurier, previously worked as a summer clerk, associate, and partner, before being named Portland office co-managing partner.

“Penny and I are fortunate to have been a part of the Stoel Rives family for many years. We have served at every level in a lawyer’s career and bring empathy, perspective and institutional knowledge to our new roles,” said Filippi. “Our broad perspective, varying approaches, and shared vision will help us to lead the Portland office while we work to foster a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work environment, and continue to represent our clients with dedication and vigor.”

Van Valkenburg will continue to practice law in the firm’s Technology and Intellectual Property Group and will remain the head of Stoel Rives’ antitrust compliance practice.  He also will continue his community service activities, including serving on the Boards of Greater Portland Inc. and the Portland State University Foundation.

“Serving as the Portland Office Managing Partner for the last 11 years has been an honor and a privilege,” said Van Valkenburg.  “We have chosen two outstanding leaders in Penny and David to succeed me.  I know they will continue our commitment to providing exemplary client service, attracting and retaining excellent lawyers, and making Stoel Rives a great place to work.”

“Stoel Rives was founded in Portland and our attorneys have provided trusted counsel to Oregon businesses and organizations for a more than a century,” said James E. Torgerson, Firm-wide Managing Partner. “With Penny and David at the helm, the Portland office will remain committed to improving client relations, fostering innovation, and attracting top legal and administrative talent who will lead Stoel Rives into the future.”
