Stoel Rives Helps Secure $9.4 Million Jury Verdict in Patent Infringement Case for SnapPower

Stoel Rives patent litigator Elliott Williams was part of a trial team that secured a significant jury verdict on behalf of SnapRays, LLC (d/b/a SnapPower) in a patent infringement case against American Tack & Hardware Company Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

The litigation arose from allegations that American Tack & Hardware infringed a series of patents relating to powered electrical outlet cover plates—products that incorporate additional functionality, including features such as lighting and charging capabilities. SnapRays alleged that American Tack’s competing products, including its LumiCover and GloCover lines, infringed those patents.

Prior to trial, the court granted SnapRays’ partial motion for summary judgment on infringement, with the case proceeding to trial on issues including invalidity and damages.

The dispute culminated in a jury trial, after which jurors returned a verdict in favor of SnapRays, awarding $9.4 million in damages and rejecting the defendant’s invalidity defenses. The jury also found that the infringement was willful.

The case reflects the firm’s work on intellectual property disputes involving patented consumer products.
