Stoel Rives lawyers have been leaders in equal-opportunity efforts for more than 25 years. Charlie Hinkle, a prominent appellate lawyer in the firm's Portland office, was the first chair of the Oregon State Bar Affirmative Action Program, which was the first such program instituted by any bar in the country. In addition, Stoel Rives was among the first U.S. law firms to extend the option of full health and life insurance coverage to same-sex domestic partners of lawyers and employees.
