SEATTLE - The American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Taxation will present Stoel Rives attorney Irwin Treiger with its 2009 Distinguished Service Award at the ABA plenary meeting on May 9. The annual award honors an individual whose career reflects exceptional contributions to the tax system and tax bar. This year's award honors Treiger for his "extraordinary professional accomplishments, his leadership and his community service."

Treiger has long been active in the organized bar, serving as chair of the ABA Section of Taxation and as a member of the ABA's Board of Governors. He also chaired the Tax Section of the Washington State Bar Association and the National Conference of Lawyers and CPAs. Outside of his practice, Treiger has worked tirelessly to promote Seattle's economic and cultural development. He served as chair of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Seattle Foundation, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and trustee of the Samis Foundation and the Seattle Rotary. In his capacity as head of the King County Baseball Park Commission, Treiger helped secure the construction of Safeco Field, which contributed to keeping the Mariners baseball team in Seattle. In honor of his efforts, Treiger threw the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field on his 70th birthday.

"A key measure of a law firm's success is its legacy of professional excellence and community service," said Bob Van Brocklin, managing partner of Stoel Rives. "For half a century, Irwin has exemplified these qualities to the highest standard. The Distinguished Service Award is altogether in keeping with the high esteem in which Irwin is held by his peers and the wider Seattle community. We're proud of his contributions as an attorney, and we admire his personal commitment and values."

Treiger is a business lawyer, with expertise in estate planning, charitable giving and nonprofits. He has substantial experience in contested federal tax matters, and routinely advises small businesses and nonprofits on issues ranging from estate planning and trust and probate administration to financial and real estate planning. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and its School of Law, where he graduated first in his law school class and was editor-in-chief of its law review. He received his LL.M. in taxation from New York University, where he also graduated first in his class.
