With over 160 lawyers, the Stoel Rives Portland office is both the firm's largest and the largest law practice in Oregon. The firm's Portland based clients include some of Oregon's most prominent companies, including Columbia Sportswear, Electro Scientific Industries, FEI Company, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Knowledge Learning Corporation, Mentor Graphics, NIKE, Northwest Natural Gas, Oregon Steel Mills, PacifiCorp, Pope & Talbot, Portland General Electric, Precision Castparts, Schnitzer Steel, StanCorp Financial Group, Tektronix, and many others. In 2005, Stoel Rives was named "Oregon's Most Admired Company" among law firms in a poll of 800 Oregon CEOs conducted by the Portland Business Journal.
In addition to representing established companies, the firm has an active practice representing start up and emerging companies, handling everything from business formation to venture financings to initial public offerings. In fact, Stoel Rives has taken more Oregon based companies public than any other law firm. In 2005, the firm's Technology Ventures Group was named "service provider of the year" at an annual awards dinner organized by the Oregon technology industry.
Stoel Rives lawyers also are active in the Portland community. Among the Boards and Commissions on which we have served are the Portland Public Schools School Board; the Campaign for Equal Justice; Legal Aid Services of Oregon; the ACLU of Oregon; the Oregon Economic and Community Development Commission; the Oregon Transportation Commission; 1000 Friends of Oregon; the Oregon Symphony; Oregon Ballet Theater; Portland Center Stage; the Portland Art Museum; and United Way of the Columbia-Willamette. In 2005 Stoel Rives was recognized by United Way as "Best of Region" among professional service firms.
The firm's offices are located in the heart of downtown Portland, overlooking the Willamette River, less than 90 minutes from the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The region is characterized by unparalleled recreational activities, including hiking, mountain climbing, white water rafting, biking, and championship golf. Portland also is home to a nationally recognized symphony, ballet company, theater company, opera, and art museum, as well as a wide variety of top-rated restaurants.
The Oregon economy features world leaders in technology, design, footwear and apparel, metals, and wood products. Demographically, the Portland region has been a magnet for newcomers. According to U.S. government census data, from 1990 to 2000, Portland was among the top destinations in the nation for college educated 25- to 34-year-olds.
