Rachel D. Groshong

Overview

Rachel Groshong is a litigator in the Seattle office of Stoel Rives where she serves as co-chair of the Transportation Industry Group. As a Seattle native, Rachel has a deep understanding of the issues facing businesses, governmental agencies, and individuals throughout Washington. She actively draws on her local relationships to ensure that her clients are well-represented in a cost-effective way. Rachel has experience handling complex commercial disputes, trying cases in both federal and state courts in Washington, and arguing before the Washington State Court of Appeals. She has significant experience with eDiscovery and has overseen the collection, review, and production of millions of documents and drafted and argued countless discovery motions to the courts and discovery masters.

Before joining Stoel Rives, Rachel was a clerk for Justice Charles W. Johnson of the Supreme Court of Washington and an extern to the Honorable Beth Andrus in King County Superior Court.

Experience

  • WSDOT v. STP. Representation of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in its claims against the tunneling contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners. After a nine-week trial the jury returned a verdict in favor of WSDOT for the full amount of its claims, $57.2 million, and denied the contractor’s claim for $337 million.
  • Port of Ridgefield v. Union Pacific. Representation of the Port of Ridgefield in Model Toxics Control Act contribution litigation in four-week federal bench trial against Union Pacific Railroad. Obtained two favorable rulings before trial on summary judgment regarding the Port’s ability to recover Washington State Department of Ecology grant money from Union Pacific.
  • King and Mockovak Eye Center, Inc., P.S., et al. v. Mockovak. Representation of physician in three-week jury trial over ownership of U.S. and Canadian medical practices. Obtained jury verdict in favor of physician.
