Joe Funk, Editor of Seed Today reported on remarks made by Stoel Rives attorney Nicole Hancock at the recent Pacific Seed Association's 2013 Annual Convention held in San Diego, California. Hancock was an official presenter at the event.

Hancock offered advice to seed companies facing a lawsuit. "Act quickly," she was quoted as saying, "because the suit will not go away. The preparations you take immediately can have both legal and monetary implications several months later in court. Immediately notify your insurance company. Delayed notification could cancel their obligation to provide legal representation."

Hancock added that companies should quickly circle the wagon within the company. "The last thing you need – even if you feel the pending law suit is totally without merit – is to have an employee making wild statements to the local media. They will know you are being sued and they will come asking questions. Prepare your people. A thoughtless comment to a reporter could provide an opening for the prosecution to use against you when you are on the witness stand."
