Stoel Rives attorney Greg Jenner was quoted in Law360 in an article titled “Political Discord May Kill Tax Reform Before It Begins.” The article discusses the prospects for one of President Trump’s campaign goals, tax reform, which in the existing political climate many, including architects of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 such as Jenner, see as extremely difficult, or even impossible, to achieve.

According to Jenner, who was involved in the last tax reform effort while working as tax counsel for the Senate Finance Committee, the 1986 bill eventually passed in October of that year because those involved were all working toward the same fundamental goals of lowering tax rates and shutting down abusive tax shelters.

“Now compare that to 2017,” Jenner said. “You’ve got partisanship, you’ve got complete divergence of interests, you’ve got a president who, whether you believe he was legitimately elected or not, is very, very controversial. ... I don’t think the Democrats or the Republicans have any interest in working together. In 1986, they did.”
