Jason Johns Quoted on Positive Effects of New FERC Order Reforming Electric Grid Interconnection Rules

In a new article, Jason Johns shared his thoughts with pv magazine on the impacts of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) recently issued Order No. 2023, which seeks to resolve problems facing generator interconnection queues nationwide and accelerate new resources’ access to wholesale power markets.

Interconnection queues are a roadblock for the transition in the U.S. to clean energy. By the end of 2022, more than 2,000 GW of generation and storage projects, 94% of which are solar, wind or storage, were held up in a queue, with an average wait time of five years for clearance.

According to veteran FERC attorney Johns: “FERC’s Order No. 2023 does two things simultaneously—it catches much of the country up to interconnection procedures that have been in use in organized markets for the past 10 years, while also pushing advanced markets forward by imposing sets of firm timelines and standards.”
