HISTORY

In 1883, Charles H. Carey stepped from a San Francisco packet steamer onto the Portland docks with a single $20 gold piece in his pocket. Launching his legal practice at age 26, he was just two years older than the state of Oregon. When James B. Kerr joined Carey in 1907, the partnership that would become Stoel Rives was formed.

Stoel Rives grew up with some of the Northwest’s earliest railroads and electric utility companies, including the Northern Pacific Railway and Electric Bond & Share, the holding company that eventually spawned PacifiCorp. As businesses expanded in the Pacific Northwest, our firm kept pace with our clients and the world around us. Today we work with a wide range of clients and industries, such as high-tech Tektronix, homegrown Columbia Sportswear and globe-spanning Iberdrola. Above all, five qualities have defined us during our first century and continue to guide us as we embark on our second: Experience, service, teamwork, innovation and community.

COMMUNITY

Stoel Rives’ involvement in our communities is as varied and diverse as the people who work here. We believe that everyone, regardless of means, should have access to our legal system. And we take seriously our responsibility to help enhance the livability of our communities for all. We support a variety of organizations through sponsorships, and Stoel Rives employees are encouraged to engage in pro bono and community activities of their own choice. As part of our 100th anniversary commemoration, we are launching a new community service program called "A Day to Make a Difference." All personnel will be given paid time off to perform up to one full day of volunteer work during the coming year.

DIVERSITY

Stoel Rives has been a pioneer in the advancement of women lawyers. We hired our first female associate in 1953, at a time when very few women were licensed to practice law. In 1975, Stoel Rives was the first large law firm in Oregon to appoint a female partner, Velma Jeremiah. "V.J." was soon joined by other women, and by the mid-1980s, Stoel Rives was one of the first firms of more than 100 attorneys to have 10 percent women partners. The women at Stoel Rives have been active leaders in the community. The first woman president of the Multnomah Bar Association and the first woman from Oregon appointed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals were Stoel Rives lawyers. Several women lawyers at the firm have served as president of the Oregon Bar Association or as bar examiners. Stoel Rives lawyers were also active in breaking down gender-exclusive admissions policies at prominent men's clubs.

Stoel Rives’ history of inclusion continues today. Key leadership roles in our firm are currently held by women, and our diversity initiative is growing by leaps and bounds. Through support groups, mentoring, educational programs, sponsorships, outreach efforts and community service, Stoel Rives strives to create opportunities for each unique voice in our culture to be heard. As proud as we are of our firm’s history, we envision even greater things to come.
